About the 'Chicago' Broadway Musical
"Chicago" follows the story of "Roxie Hart," a housewife and nightclub dancer during the roaring '20s, and how she "dazzles" her way out of conviction after murdering the man she's having an affair with, through the help of Chicago's smoothest criminal lawyer "Billy Flynn using media-duping tactics that would put "Yellow Journalism" to shame.
The production first started its inaugural Broadway run back on Nov. 14, 1996, until February of 1997 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Initially, the revival of "Chicago" was done as part of the three presentations during that year's iteration of the "Encores!" concert series dedicated to the revival of beloved Broadway classics.
Eventually, the musical was relocated to the Shubert Theatre and performed in the house until January 26, 2003, before reopening again on January 29 of that same year at the Ambassador Theatre.
Since its start in 1996, the production has collectively been watched by over 34 million people across 33,500 performances in theaters around the world. It boasts one of the longest "lifespans" of a Broadway production, second only to "The Phantom of the Opera."
