After taking the world by storm, Netflix's hit show "The Queen's Gambit" is in the works to be a Broadway musical stage play. Back in 2021, entertainment company Level Forward acquired the license to adapt the show.
The adaptation will include music written and composed by Oscar-nominated Mitski, famous for her recent chart-topper "My Love Mine All Mine." In addition, the musical's book will be penned by playwright Eboni Booth, with its direction coming from Obie Award-winner Whitney White.
Originally a 1983 novel by author Walter Tevis, "The Queen's Gambit" was about the prodigal chess player Beth Harmon and her tumultuous journey to becoming a grandmaster. Among the 62 million unique views that the show had was Mitski's, who professed to have been hooked on the TV drama.
"Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen's Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel. So I was already determined to be a member of this team," Mitski said in a statement.
The Musical Narrative of 'The Queen's Gambit'
The Netflix drama featured an original score from Carlos Rivera, who utilized orchestral sounds to emphasize the pointed changes in Harmon's life across the 7-episode narrative of the series. It also featured songs from famous artists like the Vogues, Quincy Jones, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, and the Monkees.
In a statement, Book stated how the show was a unique story about "yearning for connection and finding your way in life, no matter the barriers." She also expressed her excitement in exploring the narrative in new musical ways alongside "extraordinary artists."
Last September, Mitski dropped her latest studio album "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We," which featured the artist's captivating storytelling chops underscored by orchestral soundscapes, qualities that will undoubtedly translate into her musical adaptation of "The Queen's Gambit."
