UFC fighter Jon Jones was arrested for violating the terms of his parole after he was pulled over by a police officer for drag racing. Jones denies he was drag racing, and now the matter is up to a judge to decide.
The 28-year-old former UFC Light heavyweight champion was cited for drag racing, along with other charges, including equipment modifications, issue with a license plate and failure to maintain a traffic lane.
Jones was pulled over March 24 for allegedly drag racing. He denied the claim and lost his temper when the officer insisted that he was revving his engine at a red light before taking off at a high speed in a drag race with a Cadillac. Jones then called the officer some pretty harsh names. He eventually apologized for his poor behavior.
"I was not drag racing nor was I speeding. I did not get a speeding ticket. I was driving within the speed limit of the 35 mph zone," Jones said in a statement. "I feel that police used a technicality to ticket me for drag racing, for simply revving my engine and acknowledging some of my local fans. I regrettably said words to the police officer out of frustration, for which I apologize, but I do feel this was excessive."
These citations proved to be problematic for the former champion as a judge deemed them to be in direct violation of his probation that stems from a hit-and-run last April when Jones fled the scene after a car accident involving a pregnant woman.
Jones is still scheduled to face light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier in UFC 197 on April 23 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena.
