Earlier this year, Colin Stetson announced the release of another solo record entitled SORROW. With features by Arcade Fire's Sarah Neufeld and Liturgy's Greg Fox, Stetson has now released a five-minute video extract entitled SORROW I to accompany the release.
The video was directed by cinematographer Dan Huiting, which is coupled with B-roll aerial footage of the Iceland landscape. And as it's been stated, the double vinyl LP will be available for download and physical purchase on April 8.
Remarking on the album, Stetson said:
"We all have those moments when we experience a piece of music that transforms us, and [Gorecki's Third Symphony] was one of those moments for me. Over the years, I went on to listen to this record countless times, always determined to absorb every instance of it, to know it throughout and fully. And this dedication to a thorough knowledge of the piece eventually gave way to a need to perform it.
"The concept was simple, and true to the original score. I haven't changed existing notation, but rather have worked with altering instrumentation, utilizing a group consisting heavily of woodwinds, synthesizers, and electric guitars, as well as retaining an element of the orchestral in a string section of violins and cellos, which features prominent and decorated Canadian musicians Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre) and Rebecca Foon (Saltland, Esmerine). "
As the video shows, the landscape of Iceland provides a wonderful backdrop to the electric and vocal elements rooted in the music. The aerial shots of the snow-covered trees and ground cater to the song's eerie quality as well as its sonic purpose.
It's also been noted that Mr. Stetson will perform at the Convergence festival at London's Scala on March 16. At the festival, the composer will premiere new solo material that has yet to be recorded.
So without further ado, check out the visual concept for SORROW below.
