With a documentary about her having been nominated for an Academy Award, Nina Simone will now be paid tribute in the form of a biopic starring Zoe Saldana as the mentally unstable jazz singer. Entitled Nina, the film hits theaters April 22 and a trailer for the movie has (finally) surfaced.
It certainly has been a long time coming for Saldana to portray Ms. Simone on the silver screen. Having gone through the ringer, the film will finally see the light of day this spring. After nearly two years of sitting in the vault after it premiered at Cannes, a trailer depicting Saldana as the singer is available for viewing.
The film marks the directorial debut of Cynthia Mort. In the motion picture, the narrative centers around Ms. Simone's re-entrance into the music sphere. Starring David Oyelowo as Simone's contentious nurse-manager, Clifton Henderson, the film centers on Nina's career as it was coming to an end.
Having been hospitalized for mental health issues as well as problems with addiction, Zoe Saldana embodies the characteristics associated with Simone's extremely volatile attitude.
She may not sing like her--or even sound like her when she's speaking--but Ms. Saldana appears to capture the essence of what Ms. Simone was all about. Her attitudes towards music and life as well as her unique form of dress are all encapsulated by Saldana is a moving way.
And it's also been reported that Saldana wore make up that made her skin a darker hue as well as a prosthetic nose to fully capture the image of Ms. Simone.
But image isn't the only thing and Saldana's voice doesn't appear to resemble that of Ms. Simone's. Perhaps we just have to wait for the film later this year.
