In a rare late-night appearance, the astounding songstress Lauryn Hill passed through The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform her version of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good."
Backed by a string section, horns, singers and more, the song comes as part of Hill's contributions to the compilation Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone. The album comes as supplement to the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone.
On the disc, Hill sang on six Simone songs including "Ne Me Quitte Pas," "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," "Wild Is the Wind," "African Mailman" and "I've Got Life," an interpolation of "Ain't Got No, I Got Life."
Hill remarked on Miss. Simone and the record:
"Because I fed on this music, both hers and lovers like her, like my basic food, I believed I always had a right to have a voice. Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift."
As Rolling Stone points out, The Tonight Show visit was Hill's first late-night TV performance in four years. Before this, she stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in 2011 to cover Bob Marley's "Chances Are" and "Could You Be Loved" as part of a weeklong tribute to the reggae legend and the late father of Hill's former partner Rohan Marley.
If you aren't in the know, the Nina Simone covers album was released July 10 and features covers by Mary J. Blige, Common, Alice Smith, Simone's daughter Lisa and more.
Also, Miss Hill co-produced the disc, which will be released on RCA.
Thus, without further ado, here is Lauryn Hill interpreting Nina Simone the only way she knows how.
