Adam Sandler's well-known name and brand of humor has garnered yet another profitable enterprise through his production of Netflix film The Ridiculous Six. In fact, The Ridiculous Six is breaking Netflix viewing records, despite horrifically poor critic ratings.
Filled with crude humor, racist jokes, and donkey feces, The Ridiculous Six seems to be striking a chord somewhere in Netflix audiences. The movie, one of four Adam Sandler will be producing in conjunction with Netflix, has gotten more views in its first 30 day stint on Netflix than has any other movie ever shown on the streaming service. Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, said that "The Ridiculous Six, by way of example, in the first 30 days on Netflix it's been the most-watched movie in the history of Netflix. It's also enjoyed a spot at number one in every territory we operate in, and in many of them it's still number one."
So a literally crap-filled western parody is one of the most popular shows on Netflix. It's still showing up on my recommended stream for some reason.
All the advertising didn't hurt. According to The Verge, "Netflix kicked its promotional machine into high gear for the release, to the point where it was hard to escape ads for the movie no matter your internet haunts; the service's user base is bigger than ever and constantly growing, meaning there are way more people available to watch the movie now than a year ago."
Hopefully the next three films Adam Sandler does with Netflix are more interesting and better reviewed than The Ridiculous Six. Of course, the similarity in name to another popular film (The Hateful Eight) can't have hurt it at all. One interesting thing to note about Sandler's film is that it got a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. And I'm not surprised, as this wasn't one of Sandler's better films.
