Looking at the season QB Jay Cutler is having for the Chicago Bears during this 2015 NFL season, there's no question that the new coaching staff has played a major role in not only getting him right, but the play-calling and system right as well. But there are concerns, and they mostly have to do with offensive coordinator Adam Gase. The Bears' OC has been a head-coaching candidate for the past couple of seasons and not found a spot, but after his latest work with Cutler, that could change this offseason. Never fear, though, Bears fans, as the team has options in QB coach Dowell Loggains and even potentially San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy.
It's becoming more and more apparent that Jay Cutler has won over head coach John Fox and, more importantly, GM Ryan Pace. This was a test-and-see type of season, and Cutler answered with his best season as a pro.
No. 6 is on pace for his best passer rating, second-highest completion percentage, third-highest yards-per-game average and, most crucially, his lowest interception rate of his career. He's nearly halved his career interception rate of every 3.2 out of 100 passes being picked off, as he's at just 1.7 percent in 2015. In 460 pass attempts, he's thrown just eight interceptions, and has zero multi-interception games this season.
While his touchdown rate isn't as high as it normally is, that's likely due to having guys like Marquess Wilson, Eddie Royal and Marc Mariani as his top receivers most weeks thanks to injuries.
Anyhow, this breakthrough season has been seen as both Cutler maturing, but also a masterful job by Gase. If anyone doubted the offensive coordinator before, they certainly believe he's legit now. What that means, though, is that he'll most certainly have interviews, and if he is offered a head-coaching position, he'll be gone.
To many Bears fans, this spells disaster. It would keep the OC carousel going for Cutler and the offense, as they pretty much have a new one every season. But there are options.
The first option is in-house. Quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains has a great rapport with Cutler, and has even before joining forces this season. If Loggains were to be promoted to OC, he could certainly run a very similar offense to that of Gase's, and then things don't need to change much. For Cutler, the only difference would be the voice in his helmet. Ultimately, this seems like a good deal.
However, that plan could fall through. If Gase does become a head coach elsewhere, there are those who believe he and Loggains are a deal package, and that the latter would follow Gase and become his OC wherever he lands his head-coaching gig.
Chicago would need a backup plan, and they may have one in the works.
There is a developing rumor that Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints has talked privately about becoming the San Diego Chargers' next head coach. Bad news for current Chargers HC Mike McCoy, but potentially phenomenal news for the Bears.
