Quentin Tarantino's had a rough time getting his film, 'The Hateful Eight,' viewed the way he wants it. Not only does Disney force out his film from some theaters, but the movie itself has already been pirated and put online. The FBI has linked it to the 'Point Break' remake producer.
It's a cutthroat business, and Tarantino's had plenty of throats cut in his movies, but the poor guy just can't get any breaks with his latest movie. As one Uproxx writer put it, "It's almost as if no one can watch or experience Tarantino's latest in the manner he wants them to."
What's worse is the sheer number of downloads of the film. According to Variety, "Quentin Tarantino's "Hateful Eight" drew 569,153 IP addresses" over a period of about 24 hours. And while not everyone who torrents would otherwise buy or watch the movie, that still represents a lot of money lost, plus, I'd wager it's rather embarrassing.
The FBI traced the leak back to, Andrew Kosove, the producer of the 'Point Break' remake, who denies he ever got the screener. "The screener copy of 'The Hateful Eight' that was sent to me at Alcon Entertainment never touched my hands nor was I aware that it had been delivered." One of the groups responsible for the piracy is Hive-CM8.
Is it just me, or is cybercrime getting really annoying? If it's not hacker groups shutting down Christmas (okay, Xbox Live and PSN servers), it's another group of ***holes stealing a film that's almost definitely going to be good. It's a Quentin Tarantino movie, after all.
Though this wasn't the only major movie that's been leaked before its release. The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, and others "were leaked to piracy sites after screeners were sent to voters for awards consideration.
So what do you think of this bit of piracy? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
