Donald Trump and Jeb Bush have been fighting a "War of Insults" for quite some time. Whether it's Trump poking at Bush's wife or energy, or Bush's claims of his opponent being a 'chaos candidate,' things have become increasingly heated between the two candidates for the presidential nomination.
It's a sorry state of things when political candidates, instead of focusing on the issues at hand, turn instead to ad hominem attacks on each other. Of course, considering such tactics are far more entertaining (to most people) than listening to interminable debates of economic or military policies, perhaps it's not the worst stratagem for candidates to employ.
Since that seems to be the case, it's no wonder that Donald Trump is doing so well in the polls and why Jeb Bush has started his own campaign against the real estate mogul. In the CNN debate, Bush went after Trump with remarks like "you're not going to be able to insult your way to the presidency" and "Donald, you know, is great at -- at the one-liners, but he's a chaos candidate. And he'd be a chaos president. He would not be the commander in chief we need to keep our country safe." To sum up Bush's opinion of Trump, Jeb stated that "Donald Trump is a jerk."
And needless to say, Trump hasn't been taking these accusations lying down. Trump has referred to Bush as "a weak and ineffective person. He's also a low-energy person, which I've said before." And personal attacks aren't the only direction Trump has gone, extending his vitriol to Bush's family. In a Twitter comment that was later deleted, Trump attacked Bush's immigration policy with "#JebBush has to like the Mexican Illegals because of his wife." In more recent comments, he claimed "He's an embarrassment to the Bush family, and in fact he doesn't even want to use the Bush name, which is interesting,"
It's been an amusing if somewhat disheartening campaign season for the Republican presidential nomination considering it's been more focused on outlandish comments, personal attacks, and the like rather than important issues. We can only hope that whoever is chosen as the Republican candidate behaves more professionally during the presidential campaign.
But considering the journey so far, it seems unlikely.
