'Mystery Science Theater 3000' Comeback Sets Kickstarter Funding Record

The show that not only made fun of bad films but also expanded out movie consciousness (How else could we know Bert I. Gordon, Hal Warren or Coleman Francis?) is coming back. Show creator Joel Hodgson has long expressed a desire to bring the show back for a whole new generation to discover. He started a Kickstarter account for that purpose and it not only reached but broke the Kickstarter record for film and TV previously held by the theatrical film version of Veronica Mars.

The show originally followed Joel Robinson (Hodgson) as he was experimented on by mad scientist, Dr. Clayton Forrester and his assistant TV's Frank. Joel, Tom and Crow, two robots Joel made to help him cope with having to watch bad films. From The Journal Review site, "Premised on the idea that B movies are better with heckling commentary, the show debuted in 1988 on Minneapolis-St. Paul local television. Its low-budget charm attracted Comedy Central and, later, the Sci-Fi channel.

Hodgson (and later Michael Nelson) starred as a janitor trapped in space, forced to watching corny horror and sci-fi movies with three robot companions. Each episode featured a B movie in its entirety with running commentary from the gang on the Satellite of Love."

Hodgson plans to hire all new actors which will make it harder for the ones who grew up on the show, or love Mike better, to fully accept. According to Bleeding Cool, "the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 will star Jonah Ray as man trapped in space and forced to watch cheesy movies. With him will be Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn as robot pals Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo. On Earth, his evil uberlords will be played by Felicia Day and Patton Oswald.
