Did Prince Charles of the United Kingdom and Bill Nye (the science guy) really claim that terrorism, including the Paris attacks, are related to climate change?
Yes, they are.
For the Bill Nye side of things, Nye claimed in a recent interview with HuffPost Live that "It's very reasonable that the recent trouble in Paris is a result of climate change." He elaborates further, tying in the unrest caused by lower rain falls causing farms to fail, youth migrating to cities, and more in a very logical fashion. Regardless of the peculiar take on the causes of terrorism (which I don't necessarily agree with), it's a well argued proposition.
Prince Charles was asked a while back in an interview with Sky "whether there was direct link between climate change, conflict and terrorism, Charles said: 'Absolutely.'"
The prince also claimed that "there's very good evidence indeed that one of the major reasons for this horror in Syria, funnily enough, was a drought that lasted for about five or six years, which meant that huge numbers of people in the end had to leave the land but increasingly they came into the cities."
While there may be some correlation between terrorism and climate change, many scientists and journalists agree that there may not be causation.
An article by The Telegraph, the author writes that "other autocratic countries in the neighbourhood, like Iran, suffered just as much, but didn't implode in such dramatic fashion."
And there are all those who don't accept climate change as a reality that would deny this as well.
In 2013, Stanford scientists Sol Hsiang and Marshall Burke did a study on conflicts, in which they "found that higher temperatures and extreme precipitation tend to correlate with greater incidence of conflict." They did note, however, that "There's no conflict that we think should be wholly attributed to some specific climatic event."
So what's your take on the whole climate issue/terrorism correlation? Is there causation, or does this just happen to be going on at the same time? Let us know in the comments section below.
