Movies based off video games often have a bad rep for being rather crappy all around, but with the coming of the The Witcher movies, is a video game renaissance rising?
The dawn of a new era arrived with the latest generation of superhero movies that have boosted what were once nerd-only fandoms to a new level of prestige, and with that new-found status have come the resources needed to make better and better films in areas that formerly have been sorely lacking.
One of these is the genre of video game movies. I can't recall a really good movie based on a video game (and no, I don't count Tomb Raider despite having Angelina Jolie). With Blizzard's coming 2016 movie based on the World of Warcraft universe and now also The Witcher movie coming out in 2017, these may be the dawn of a new era of video game movies.
And I'm curious to see how The Witcher is handled. It's a fascinating series game-wise, and hopefully it's done justice. I'm not too worried though. It appears that the series is in respectable hands.
"This is thanks to a joint effort between the American producers at the Sean Daniel Company (the folks behind the Mummy movies) and Polish production company Platige Image, which has hired Tomasz Bagiński to direct the film. Bagiński was nominated for an Oscar for his short film The Cathedral and also helped make cut scenes for the Witcher games, so it sounds like he's pretty qualified for this gig."
The movie version of The Witcher will not be continuing the video game side of things, but rather focusing on some of the work done by the original author of the novels, Andrzej Sapkowski, a native of Poland.
"The full-length feature films will focus on Geralt, the main character of The Witcher novels and games, and will be based on "themes from" the short stories 'The Witcher' and 'Lesser Evil.' 'Lesser Evil' details how Geralt came to be known as 'the butcher of Blaviken.'"'
So what do you think? Is this the start of a new era in the video game movie genre? Or is this doomed to fail even before it starts (again)?
