The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues took to the ice Wednesday night in a matchup of bitter rivals. In a rather high-scoring affair, St. Louis was about to defeat the Blackhawks 6-5, with Vladimir Tarasenko scoring the game-winner in overtime. Truly, the Blues were able to steal the game and two points, as they were down 5-2 in the first period.
You read that right: 5-2 after one.
Chicago came out on fire. They scored in bunches, finding net on three in the first 6:35 of the game, and then added two more at the end of the period only :43 seconds apart. Even more impressive was the fact that all five goals were scored by different guys -- everyone was getting in on the action.
The Blues, though, were able to keep themselves alive, barely, scoring two of their own for an extremely high-scoring seven-goal period.
However, the rest of the game was a different story.
The Hawks only took 22 shots in the second and third periods combined after taking 18 in the first. The most important part of that, though, for the Blues is that none of them went in. Meanwhile, St. Louis only took 19 shots during the final two periods -- after taking just eight in the first -- but found net three more times to tie. All three of those goals came in the second period, leading to a scoreless third.
Finally, in OT, the Blues stole that final point away from the Hawks and the rest is history. Another chapter in the rivalry complete, and this one may haunt the Hawks just a bit, as they really gave the game away.
Following tonight's matchup, the Blues improve to 19 points on the season (9-3-1) and second in the Central Division while the Hawks move up to just 15 points (7-5-1), only good enough for sixth place.
