If you're harping to own a piece of jazz history in the form of real estate look no further. The legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday's Upper West Side townhouse is on the market for a whopping $12.95 million.
Owners of the 6,300-square-foot townhouse at 26 West 87th Street off Central Park West bought the property in 2009 for more than half the current value. The two brothers restored the 5-story mansion back its original settings.
It is labeled as a "Renaissance Revival brownstone" and is set along a tree-lined block off Central Park West and has a magnificent exterior.
Outside of the home are "motifs of flower garlands and an L-shaped stoop with two landings" and also includes seven bedrooms, six full bathrooms and a couple of powder rooms, according to the New York Post.
The home's listing states: "26 West 87th Street, sitting less than a block west of Central Park, has six floors (if you include the garden and basement levels). Holiday, known to many as "Lady Day," made this her residence until her untimely death at age 44, generally believed to have been the result of substance abuse. (She actually died at Metropolitan Hospital on the East Side.) There are whopping seven bedrooms, six full bathroom, and two powder rooms. The L-shaped stoop, impressive enough with its two landings, will do an owner one better because it is heated."
Adorned with plaster moldings, wood paneling, a grand staircase and fireplace mantels, the home is considered to be a beautiful model of the late-singer's life as a jazz musician in New York.
Recently, Charlie "Bird" Parker's townhouse at 151 Avenue B in Alphabet City went on the market for $9.25 million and is also a staple of jazz that still exists in the fabric of New York City.
If you have the coin, be sure to reach out to the listing and in the meantime, stay up on Ms. Holiday below.
