We haven't seen Luke Skywalker in any of the footage or marketing material for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so where is he? What capacity will we see the last remaining Jedi in when the film hits theaters in December?
We know that Luke Skywalker survived the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but what role does he play in The Force Awakens. Is he in hiding, or will his role be a lot larger than we could ever imagine? We know that he is in the film, he is even given film credits, so why are we not let in on this little secret? This is the biggest mystery of what will definitely be one of this years biggest movies.
In a recent chance encounter with The Sydney Morning Herald, J.J. Abrams was asked this very question. The funny thing about this was his response. He is determined to not follow in the same disastrous footsteps he did with Star Trek Into Darkness. This is apparent. His response to them is great because he says, "These are good questions to be asking. I can't wait for you to find out the answers." He went on further to say that Luke being absent from everything is no accident.
There is a brief glimpse of what some think is Luke Skywalker in the trailer, his robotic hand touching the top of R2-D2, but this is only an assumption. So what do you think? Concept art show Kylo Ren with robotic body parts, but is this him, or Luke Skywalker? There are a number of reasons for the secrecy, but it probably is a smart move by J.J. Abrams. Luke is probably playing a big role in the film, and he wants this to be a surprise in the film. We know that the film will not be following the Expanded Universe books that were written in the past. In fact, Disney has gone as far as to completely erase the events that have happened. So, Luke will not be training Leia to help usher in a new generation of Jedi. Or will he? There are so many question marks at this point.
This question seems to be a theme that was a driving force for the film from the beginning. According to IO9, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was attempting to recruit director J.J. Abrams for The Force Awakens and won him over with one big question, "Who is Luke Skywalker?" The question gave Abrams chills and the rest is history.
Is this the missing motivation for Kylo Ren's rage? There is a Kylo Ren toy that does say that he is seeking to destroy the Resistance and the last Jedi. Could Luke be hiding to avoid this new disturbance in The Force? Kylo Ren is definitely not completely Force sensitive, you can tell this may be the case by looking at his lightsaber. The technology seems adolescent. Is Kylo in search of Luke Skywalker because he is wanting to learn the ways of The Force the right way. There are just too many questions right now to have any answers.
