With the release of the official Star Wars VII trailer during Monday Night Football, not all fans were pleased. Rumors abound about #BoycottStarWarsVII. Guess what? It's real.
And by real, I mean it exists. Originally it appears to have actually been a "troll" post, and considering how ridiculous both ancient and modern racism is, I'm not suprised the Dark Side of the internet decided to have some fun. Sadly, it appears the Darker Side has taken over, and #BoycottStarWarsVII has become a posting board for racists everywhere who think that Star Wars characters should be played by actors of European decent.
When I first saw the post, I assumed it was a troll post. Then I discovered what appear to be actual white supremacist rhetoric tainting twitter. And like many of my fellow fans, I got a good laugh at the sheer stupidity of it all. This quote pretty much sums up everything wrong with the hashtag.
"Do the #BoycottStarWarsVII realize their hatred violates Yoda's teachings? Have they forgotten Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, or realize that the Imperial Stormtroopers were cloned from the genetic material of Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett, played by part-Maori thesp Temuera Morrison?"
How about the fact that the Rebels are fighting against a racist Empire? According to some of the lore I've read, the Empire is human supremacist and anti-everything else.
#BoycottStarWarsVII just goes to show that you can't fix stupid. It's been over 50 years since the Civil Rights Act and we still have idiots that think skin color matters.
Okay, maybe it does. I cannot for the life of me pull off yellow. My skin's just too pasty white. But I don't see why skin color should affect whether someone of African, Latino, or Asian descent should be allowed to wield a lightsaber. There's plenty of different colors to choose from.
