San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde must break through vs. the New York Giants in NFL Week 5 play for his team to have a chance at getting a win.
Hyde exploded out of the gates for the 49ers in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings with 26 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns. That was the last time that he has looked like a dominant workhorse running back. Since then, he has only topped 50 rushing yards in one of his last three games and hasn't scored a touchdown.
Those numbers have killed the 49ers, especially last week against the Green Bay Packers. He only picked up 20 yards on eight carries and looked like an absolute non-factor.
Good players always seem to come up big in key games where their teams need them the most. That is the case for the 49ers and Hyde tonight on Sunday Night Football against a talented Giants' team. If the 49ers don't come out strong offensively, it will be nearly impossible for them to pick up a win.
At just 24 years old, Hyde is in his first year as the full-time starting running back for the 49ers. Inconsistency is something that almost every young NFL struggles with and this is a situation that Hyde is more than capable of breaking through tonight and getting back on track. San Francisco has to feed him the football and instill confidence in him, which is exactly what head coach Jim Tomsula is expected to do.
Colin Kaepernick has been a major disappointment for the 49ers this season as well. His terrible play has allowed teams to make sure that Hyde doesn't beat them throughout the course of the season so far.
Perhaps tonight is the night that the 49ers' offense will finally get back on track and play like they did in Week 1. They are more than capable of putting up big numbers each and every week, but they just have to come together and execute better. If they can take care of the football and the offensive line can open up some holes for Hyde, they should be just fine tonight.
There is no question that the 49ers are the better team than the Giants, but they have to prove that on the field.
Hyde knows that his team desperately needs him to get back to being a legitimate workhorse running back. There is nothing that the Giants' defense can do against Hyde if he plays to his full potential.
Expect to see Hyde come back strong this week and to have a big game against the Giants. He is going to receive a lot of carries throughout the game to take pressure off of Kaepernick and he will show why fans hyped him up so much following his Week 1 performance.
