William P. Gottlieb's Multiple Exposures from the Golden Age of Jazz [PHOTOS]

When the Washington Post could no longer afford a photographer to shoot photos for William Paul Gottlieb's fledgling jazz column, the fresh-out-of-Lehigh grad decided he'd simply snap his own.

By 1948--that is, when William P. Gottlieb ostensibly "retired from jazz"--that genre had known no better a photog.

The eight pictures here, however, didn't make Gottlieb famous. But given their unique, even playful superimpositions, perhaps they should've.

As per Gottlieb's own wishes, the bulk of his jazz photography went into the public domain after his death. So, to see even more of William P. Gottlieb's over-exposed jazz, do your eyes a solid and head on over to Retronaut.

He would have wanted it that way.
