Georgia Bulldogs' linebacker Jake Ganus proposed to his girlfriend, Peyton Thomas, on the 50-yard line after the Bulldogs' 52-20 win against South Carolina. How he did it is one for the books.
But first, a little background on the happy couple. Ganus and Thomas have been dating for 6 years, ever since their sophomore year of high school. However, they've known each other since for 7. As Ganus put it, "It took me a whole year to get her to like me."
They both went to UAB, but things haven't been the easiest for Ganus and Thomas. After the university temporarily shut down its Blazers football program late last year for financial reasons, Ganus, a junior at the time, wasn't sure where he would be going next. Neither he nor Thomas had been apart for a very long time, and both were concerned about what came next. Fortunately for him, Georgia had lost a couple of linebackers and needed replacements.
When it came to actually proposing to Thomas, Ganus got creative. It took a bit of trickery and help from team's staff, but clearly it worked. Ganus and Richt, his coach, arranged to have the family come out onto the field for brief "Senior of the Week" award ceremony for Ganus. Of course, there was no actual award. When Thomas got out to the field Ganus knelt on one knee on the 50-yard line, still in uniform, and asked her to marry him. Stunned speechless, she replied with an enthusiastic (if silent) yes.
The proposal, while spectacular in action, wasn't completely unexpected. According to Thomas, "I've known that I would marry him since high school, it was just a matter of when it happened."
The happy couple is currently planning to get married in 2016 in Birmingham, Alabama. Ganus is hoping to start a career with the NFL, but if that doesn't come through, he still has a business degree to fall back on.
Best wishes to Ganus and Thomas! We hope you have a joyful life together!
One more thing. Check out the video he put together for her. Ganus really knows how to go the distance to make someone feel special.
