Guillermo Del Toro has said that a Pacific Rim sequel, unofficially called Pacific Rim 2, is not cancelled, despite recently being placed on indefinite hold. There is still hope to battle the Kaiju threat yet! This is great news, because Del Toro has stated in the past he has all three films laid out already. Could we see another Pacific Rim film? There is still hope according to a tweet from Del Toro.
We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it.
It moved further. I may do another movie in the middle.
It would be a big shame to see a film as important to storytelling as Pacific Rim 2 is, get tossed away. Pacific Rim 2 is a big chance for Hollywood to bring in more original story ideas. It isn't a perfect film franchise, but it isn't a rehash of the same old tired ideas swirling around Hollywood back lots either. All you naysayers out there beware, Guillermo Del Toro is not giving up on Pacific Rim 2, and the potential to turn this franchise into a trilogy.
There were many wonderful things about the original film, Pacific Rim. If you were just out looking for a fun film, there it was waiting for you to get wrapped up in its stunning visuals. It's a film about robots and alien monsters fighting it out for the survival of humanity. What is not to love? However, don't take this writer's opinion on it. The creator of the game Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima wrote an eight-tweet love-letter to the original film.
"I have never imagined that I would be fortunate enough to see a film like this in my life. The emotional rush I had inside me was the same kind I had when I felt the outer space via 2001: A Space Odyssey and and when I had touched the dinosaur in Jurassic Park. Animation and special effects movies and shows that I loved in my childhood days they all truly exist in the screen... This film is not simply a film to be respected, but most importantly, it let us dream the future of entertainment movies. Pacific Rim is the ultimate otaku film that all of us had always been waiting for. Who are you, if you are Japanese and won't watch this?"
You really don't need a better reason than that. There is one more really great reason that you should support a sequel to this film however. Pacific Rim was an original story. A story that was influenced by a lifetime of child-like wonder. Guillermo Del Toro wasn't just making a robot-vs-monster film. He was creating a film that paid homage to the Kaiju films and robot films that he grew up with. Films like Godzilla, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. In America we don't have the luxury of having a culture so in tune to a certain type of film, as they are in Japan with these types of films. The closest thing we have, is the American western. That doesn't mean that we can't embrace them however. We may have some catching up to do, but it is worth it. We need to get out there and save Pacific Rim 2 by showing our support for it.
