Alshon Jeffery has a calf injury and there is a good chance that the Chicago Bears receiver will skip their Week 1 game of the 2015 season against the Green Bay Packers. According to reports, he is leaning against playing in Week 1, which would make their task of defeating the defending NFC North champion Packers a much more difficult situation.
This news is very depressing news for the Bears, who were hoping to shock the NFL and prove that they are back to being a competitive football team. Jeffery is more than capable of shredding through an opposing teams defense by himself, but he appears to be more focused on staying 100 percent healthy for a new contract. Chicago's offense will be nothing without him, especially after losing rookie receiver Kevin White.
During the 2014 season with the Bears, Jeffery ended up catching 85 passes for 1,133 yards and 10 touchdowns.
At 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds, Jeffery has one of the most dominant all-around skill-sets in the NFL at the wide receiver position. Jay Cutler is heading into a make-or-break season in 2015 and simply won't be able to produce big numbers without his number one receiver. Jeffery will be back fairly early on in the season, but Week 1 is appearing less and less likely as it comes closer.
There aren't many wide receivers who are more aggressive on jump balls and who can make bigger plays down the field. Jeffery has made quite a few spectacular grabs throughout his young career and is ready to make even more this coming season when he gets back onto the field.
One thing is for sure, which is the fact that the Bears' fan base are not going to be happy with him holding himself out of their game against the Packers. It is one of the biggest rivalry games in any sport. Chicago fans know that without Jeffery there is little to no chance of them pulling off an upset.
Jeffery may very well be doing the smart thing by holding himself out, but it isn't going to come across that way to the fans. Calf injuries can be very annoying nagging injuries for a wide receiver who relies on his explosion and acceleration to dominate. Getting him back at full health in Week 2 or 3 would be much more valuable to the Bears' 2015 season than forcing him to return against Green Bay.
Expect to see Jeffery miss Week 1 against the Packers and focus on getting back to 100 percent for the Bears' Week 2 match-up against the Arizona Cardinals.
