Phillip Dorsett was the first-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts during the 2015 NFL Draft and it shocked the majority of the fan base. Most fans were angered by general manager Ryan Grigson's decision and thought that the team should have gone defense in the first round. Now that the season is about to get underway, those feelings have changed a bit as Dorsett looks like the team's leading option for the third receiver role behind T.Y. Hilton and Andre Johnson.
Grigson was doing everything in his power to bring playmakers to the roster, which is exactly what Dorsett will do for the offense. Andrew Luck didn't need any more weapons on the offense, but the presence of the former Miami Hurricanes speedy wide receiver will give him just that.
Reports that have come out of Colts' training camp and preseason action are very positive about Dorsett. He has been given a thumbs up for his early play and the Colts' coaching staff is extremely excited about having him for the upcoming season. Offensive coordinator, Pep Hamilton, will be able to find quite a few ways to use his new receiver.
Indianapolis is currently expected to be the best team in the AFC by most and are a good bet to win Super Bowl 50.
There is no question that their offense is going to be extremely dynamic and entertaining. Dorsett will have an opportunity to put up big numbers as a rookie alongside of Luck and will be asked to be a consistent threat to help take pressure off of both Hilton and Johnson.
During the 2014 season with the Hurricanes in college, Dorsett caught 36 passes for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. Those numbers round out to an incredibly impressive 24.2 yards per reception. If he can come even close to replicating those numbers as a rookie in the NFL, the Colts' offense is going to be practically unstoppable.
Needless to say, this is very exciting news for Dorsett and the Colts' franchise. Not only is he looking likely to make an impact offensively, he is also going to be able to use his speed on special teams.
Expect to see both Donte Moncrief and Duron Carter pick their game up over the next couple weeks in the remaining preseason games. They know that Dorsett is the leading candidate for the third receiver job and they want to make one last run at it. Even though they will bring everything they have, Dorsett simply appears to have more talent and a very large lead for the position.
