Cleveland Browns Rumors: Michigan State QB Connor Cook 2016 NFL Draft Player of Interest

The Cleveland Browns are stuck with Johnny Manziel and Josh McCown at the quarterback position for this season, but the rumor is that they are already showing interest in Michigan State Spartans star quarterback Connor Cook. He will be coming out of college to enter the 2016 NFL Draft, and is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks available in the class. Cook put together an impressive season with the Spartans last year, and is expected to have an even bigger year this season.

If the Browns are able to draft Cook, they would likely be set at the quarterback position for quite some time. He possesses above average arm strength and accuracy, and the leadership skills to bring an entire offense together.

During the 2014 college football season with Michigan State, Cook ended up throwing for 3,214 yards, 24 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions. His decisions were solid and he was an excellent leader for the offense. Michigan State is expected to be one of the top college football teams in the country this season, and will likely compete to participate in the second college football playoffs.

At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Cook is the exact size that NFL quarterbacks usually measure in at. His physical presence is certainly NFL ready, although there are some areas in his game that he needs to improve a bit before taking an NFL field.

Cook could be exactly what the doctor ordered for a Browns franchise that has been stuck in mediocrity for a long time. The franchise hasn't made the playoffs since the 2002 season.

Johnny Manziel was drafted in the first round of last year's NFL Draft, but has yet to prove that he can be a legitimate NFL starter. He has shown improvement during the first two preseason games that the Browns have played this year, but still has a lot of work to do. If he doesn't show progress this year and earn the starting job over McCown, drafting another quarterback will be Cleveland's top priority.

Needless to say, it will be very interesting to see where Cook lands in the NFL Draft. There are quite a few teams that will have interest in taking him, but the Browns are the team with the biggest need unless Manziel takes a huge leap forward in 2015.

All of that being said, expect to hear plenty more rumors about the Browns having interest in drafting Cook throughout the upcoming season. They certainly have a need at the position if Manziel doesn't break out in 2015 with a big season that shows starting potential. Cook would be a perfect fit for Cleveland, and it makes a lot of sense for them to do whatever it takes to get him.
