Comedian Stephen Colbert has openly come out in support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Colbert recently spoke up about he wants to see the Trump stay in the race long enough for him to make it to the air. Colbert also spoke up about killing off his false conservative character long for his upcoming gig as host of The Late Show.
During a recent Television Critics Association press tour stop, Stephen Colbert opened up about his “support” for Trump, saying (via Huffington Post):
“I just want to say that every little boy grows up believing they could be president of the United States, and I’m so happy that little boy turned out to be Donald Trump. I just hope he’s taking his vitamins. Please stay healthy until I get on the air. Don’t do anything dangerous, don’t ride any motorcycles. Every night I light a candle and pray that he stays in the race and I also hope that no one puts that candle anywhere near his hair.”
Where Colbert’s comments about Trump are unmistakably meant for the sake of comedy, his days as a false conservative satirist are past him. Stephen also went on to discuss his Colbert Report character and his new approach to the Late Show:
“Not having to run everything I say through the character in my head is really lovely. I felt I did everything I could with him and everything I could do with that show, other than [showcase] my honest interest in my guest, which is almost constant. Now I feel almost more freed up...When you’re interviewing people, you don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s much closer to how I learned my craft. All I really want from a guest is someone who has something to say, so I can play with them."
