Serena Williams is making her final push towards absolute greatness. And save for maybe Monica Seles, she has the greatest female tennis player title locked up safe and sound. For the rest of her days, she will be cementing her legacy for the history books. After winning her sixth Wimbledon title and her 21st Grand Slam, is there any reason not to proclaim her the greatest already?
Wimbledon was Williams' 21st win, yes. She won it pretty easily over a Spanish player by the name of Garbine-Muguruza: 6-4, 6-4. A whole lot of records will begin to fall in short order. Williams is just one win behind Steffi Graf's 22, three behind the all-time leader, Margaret Court.
Since 2014, when Williams last went out in a major, she is 28-0 and has won 4 consecutive titles. With the upcoming U.S. Open, Williams will try to do what only Maureen Connolly in 1953, Margaret Court in 1970 and Steffi Graf in 1988 have done on the women's side (i.e. win the calendar-year Grand Slam).
Just about the only sour note in Williams' quest for the record books has been a revival of the Serena Williams body controversy. For many years, the tennis star's muscular physique has been openly commented upon.
There are a lot of Serena Williams fans who have come to her defense. Most specifically, J.K. Rowling put up a picture of Serena in a tight red dress and sarcastically noted that her husband didn't look like that in a dress.
