CNN anchor Fredricka Whitfield is in a lot of hot water, after she referred to the gunman who assaulted the Dallas Police Headquarters, as “courageous” and “brave.” Now, the anchor has released a retraction, saying that she “misspoke.” However, some feel that this is “non-apology” is not enough, and some are calling for her to be suspend or even fired. Check out the video to see Fredicka’s comments for yourself.
“It was very courageous and brave, if not crazy as well, to open fire on the police headquarters, and now you have this scene, this standoff.
Merriam Webster defines the word brave as “: feeling or showing no fear : not afraid,” and defines courage as “: the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous.”
In the most technical sense it would seem that Whitfield was not wrong in the useage of the words brave and courageous. However, we as a society tend to reserve those terms as signs of respect and honor, and they are not generally applied to terrorist.
On Sunday, Whitfield briefly addressed the gaff, without using the words apologize or sorry, telling viewers (via Daily Caller):
“And yesterday during a segment on the Dallas police department attack I used to the words ‘courageous and brave’ when discussing the gunman. I misspoke, and in no way believe the gunman was courageous nor brave. And I’ll be right back.”
