It might look like a The Fault in Our Stars rip-off, but Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is standing on it’s own. Making waves at Sundance, the movie starring Thomas Mann, Ronald Cyler II and Bates Motel’s Olivia Cooke as the Me, Earl and the Dying Girl respectively, won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the annual film festival. Now, Mann is opening up about the his part, calling it the “best role” that he has ever played. Check out the report below to hear what else Mann had to say as well look at the trailer for the movie currently in theaters.
Recently, Thomas Mann opened up to Nylon about what drew him to this film and what makes this movie different your typical coming of age film:
“I loved the script so much, it was just so honest and the way the characters spoke and sounded, like that messy awkward way that teenagers speak. And I like that there was no romance, it kind of forces the movie to focus on other things. And the movie lives in all these weird grey areas, and I really responded to that. It reminded me of the kind of person I was in high school...
“It’s the best role that I’ve ever had the opportunity to play. I’ve read everything out there, every coming-of-age movie I’ve probably auditioned for. This one felt different, and then when Alfonso [ Gomez-Rejon, Director] got on board, I was like okay, this is going to be something special. I knew he wasn’t going to make a teen movie, that it was going to be something bigger than that.”
