‘Skeleton Twins’ Sydney Lucas Performs “Ring of Keys” From Best Musical ‘Fun Home’ at Tony Awards

Last night Broadway celebrated their best and brightest with the 69th annual Tony Awards. One of the most talked about moments of the ceremonies was Sydney Lucas’ (The Skeleton Twins) performance of “Ring of Keys,” from the hit musical Fun Home. The new and daring coming of age/coming out tale based on the 2006 memoir of the same name by Alison Bechdel, was nominated for an impressive 12 Tony Awards, winning 5 including Best Musical. Ahead of the awards, the very young and talented Lucas opened up about the very serious issues of gay rights and acceptance.

At the young age of 11, Sydney Lucas, has a pretty good handle on an issue that some adults can’t seem to grasp. Lucas recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about acceptance when it comes to other’s personal choices:

"People need to be allowed to be who they actually are. They can't be who somebody else wants them to be. I don't know why people care about, 'Oh no, you can't like this person.' I don't understand because I don't know what hurts someone else if a person likes somebody. How is it gonna hurt you? Just let them be who they want to be."

Sydney Lucas was nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, which ultimately went to Ruthie Ann Miles for The King and I. However, that didn’t stop the world from taking notice of this amazing young talent, and the spectacular show she represents.

Lucas won a 2014 Obie Award and also received a Drama Desk Award nomination for the role.
