While the nation is busy debating things like religious freedom laws and gay marriage rights, TV shows are continuing to push forward towards progress. One network in particular, ABC Family, is defying the “norm” and taking huge steps towards celebrating LGBT equality. Recently, the ABC Family show, Fosters, featured the youngest gay kiss ever on TV, between characters Connor and Jude (Jonnor). Now the network is promoting a new series, Becoming Us, which follows two teens who parents are seeking sexual reassignment surgery to transition from male-to-female.
ABC Family Network Executive Vice President of Programming and Development, Karey Burke recently spoke to People about the all new program:
"This story in particular is really specific and beautiful and we loved that it's from the point of view of this teen boy just trying to figure it out. The journey of acceptance is utterly authentic. Our network has a history and certain currency not being afraid of shows that tackle social issues, that shed light on current affairs. So its really in our DNA to be exploring these kind of stories."
