New Anime ‘Dragon Ball Super’ Gets Premiere Date on Japanese TV [SPOILERS]

Dragon Ball Super, the first new anime in the legendary series in 18 years, will premiere on Japanese TV starting July 5. No word yet as to when it will make treks into this country. Original Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama wrote a new story for the series and did the character designs. Kimitoshi Chioka, of Toei Animation, will serve as the series director.

The series will take up where the most recent animated film in the series, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F', which will open in select theaters in North America in August. It is this sequence that raised some eyebrows among fans because, as Inquistr.com notes, Super takes place right after Z but before GT. The website speculates that this is creator Toriyama's attempt to give Z a proper follow-up, as most were extremely disappointed by the true follow-up Dragon Ball GT.

This series will have a stronger "mysterious" villain, as well as the first appearance of Super Saiyan Gid Goku, Vegeta and golden Frieza.

"Dragon Ball Super will include a brand new villain according to a new statement released by the official Dragon Ball Super Twitter page...'The release of the TV series Dragon Ball Super based on the Akira Toriyama story begins this July. After the meeting with the God of Destruction, Beerus who had awakened from a long sleep, and after Frieza's resurrection who was once feared as the 'emperor of the universe.' An even more mysterious character now comes into play."

With Toriyama on board, fans are eagerly awaiting the final chapter in the Dragon Ball trilogy. American fans, especially, are eagerly anticipating its trek across the ocean. The adventures of Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and the rest have been cherished by millions and remain lucrative sellers on DVD and download markets.
