Japan knows Godzilla. Godzilla 2016 finds everyone's favorite dinosaur coming home to the country of his birth. 62 years on, and the big guy hasn't lost a step. The 2014 Hollywood version, which grossed $524 million worldwide, is evidence of that. The new Japanese version will have co-directors Shinji Higuchi (special effects) and Hideaki Anno ,and it will be released sometime next year.
Many of the decisions regarding the new film have yet to be determined. More important, it is unclear whether Godzilla will be CGI or the traditional man-in-a-rubber suit. The last film, Godzilla: Final Wars, used a man in a rubber suit. What is known is that Toho, the producing studio, has said that the movie will have a limited budget.
Famous for his abject hatred for Tokyo architecture (why else would he constantly be stomping it into the ground, Godzilla is mellowing with age. A newly built commercial com in Tokyo is using Godzilla's help in promos.
Wall Street Journal reports, "The Godzilla head peers out from the 8th floor of new Toho Shinjuku Building, 52 meters from ground level-about the same cinematic height as the first Godzilla in 1954...Every night, locals and tourists are treated to a light-and-sound show which brings the display to life...Until now Godzilla has been simply destroying, but we hope it will now contribute to the prosperity of Kabukicho and Shinjuku."
Godzilla 2016, as you might well have guessed, drops next year.
