Mets David Wright Injury Nightmare Continues: Diagnosed With Spinal Stenosis

The captain of the New York Mets has already had his fair share of dealing with injuries throughout the years, however, the third baseman might have met his match with his latest setback though. David Wright has been diagnosed with the back injury known as lumbar spinal stenosis. As much as he wants to get back on to the field, his nightmare season continues with what could be a long stint on the disabled list.

The idea of having such an injury is worrisome to his teammates, the organization and fans alike with other former athletes in their prime being forced out of their sport. Dr. Jeffrey Goldstein explains exactly what the condition is and its symptoms to Newsday:

"Lumbar spinal stenosis generally is defined as a narrowing of the spinal canal. This leads to compressed or pinched nerves toward the lower back and can manifest in back and leg pain and sciatica.

With Mets management having to worry about the business side of a possible future without Wright holding down the hot corner, his teammates are stuck dealing with the immediate loss of their captain and uncertainty of his return. Teammate Michael Cuddyer expressed his discouragement that diagnosis brought Wright and his team to SB Nation's Amazin' Avenue:

"We're all frustrated for him. On a personal level it stinks. Frustrating at the situation. It's frustrating and it's frustrating for him. For the same reason: not knowing. It's tough. Any time it's an indefinite -- you don't know. Broken arm, you know six weeks. Hamstring, you know, probably, three weeks. The back thing with him now, you just don't know. It's the frustration of the unknown."

Will Wright be able to make a recovery from this incredible setback? If the Mets have to make moves to replace Wright, do you think they will make a trade or bring up a minor league player? Tell us your thoughts below.
