Model-turned-Bollywood-actress Shikha Joshi committed suicide last Saturday evening in one of the most gruesome manners imaginable. The actress had been in the critically acclaimed Bollywood film BA Pass and was currently sharing a house with a friend. Joshi was 40 years old and police attribute her suicide due to despondency because of a lack of employment.
Police said that at 6:30 in the evening last Saturday night, Joshi locked herself in the bathroom with a knife. A few minutes later, the roommate knocked on the bathroom door and asked Joshi to come out. The roommate inquired why she was taking so long and entered the bathroom. They then discovered Joshi bleeding profusely from a self-inflicted wound to the neck.
The roommate rushed Joshi to the hospital where she was declared dead.
“On the way to the hospital, Joshi was conscious and able to talk. When the roommate asked why she cut herself, Joshi said that she was frustrated because she could not get any work.” said Ravindranath Pawar, senior inspector, Versova police station.
According to Pawar, there were three small marks on Joshi’s neck, apart from the large cut that ultimately led to her demise
“The smaller marks indicate her first attempts at committing suicide. They also show that a person gets cold feet at the last minute before finally committing the act. Had she been attacked by someone with a knife, there would be only one long cut. The nature of the cuts on the neck makes us believe that this is a suicide,” he said.
Joshi, of recent, was only able to secure minor roles on TV and was severely depressed as a result. Shikha Joshi is survived by her 19-year-old daughter and a husband, who reportedly resides in the US.
