The American League MVP continues to make a name for himself. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is once again showing why he is in the discussion for best overall player in the Major Leagues. He is off to a hot start statistically and is helping carry the team back towards the top of the American League West. The increase in his power numbers and velocity on his throwing arm are two of the main reasons why he is now believed to be even better than his previous MVP-winning season.
Trout is currently on pace for more than 40 home runs, while bringing down his previous year's plate discipline issue of striking out. Trout won the MVP even though he also led the league in strikeouts. With his offensive numbers either holding steady or improving, the one flaw he felt he needed to work on was his throwing strength from the outfield.
Recently a game-saving robbery of a home run, and being the starter of an 8-2 double play on the same night, showcased the work he has put in on his defense. Teammate Kole Calhoun tells MLB.com about how he has seen the improvement firsthand:
"He's been working his tail off to improve that thing. It's pretty special to see him work on something many people overlook. You could just see how much he was improving. It's a good arm, man. I mean, look at that throw. It's definitely showing up."
All of the personal numbers and achievements will mean nothing to Trout, unless he is able to use those to help his team make it to the postseason. Trout let his feelings about this known to Ozy.com:
"I don't think it would be numbers. It would be championships. Get to the playoffs. That's all. It doesn't matter what I hit."
Do you think Mike Trout is the best player in MLB right now? Has his improvement in all aspects of the game made this another possible MVP season? Tell us what you think.
