The Pokemon craze has died down somewhat from its zenith in the mid to late 90s. It, however, remains a powerhouse, able to earn parent Nintendo quite a few Yen even today. Nintendo recently released its earnings report and, along with that, provided a glimpse of its best selling games for the 3DS system. No surprise that the franchise occupied two of the top four spots. Both titles also have been available for far less time than other charters
For the past year plus, Pokemon X/Y tops the list with 13.85 million units sold worldwide as of March 31, 2015. Occupying the fourth spot is Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, which moved 9.94 million units.
More impressive is the fact that Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are enhanced remakes of previous titles and they've only been available since November of last year. In a little over four months of sales time, it is quickly baring down on such Nintendo stalwarts as Super Mario 3D Land (10 million since November 2011) and Mario Kart 7 (11.7 million since December 2011).
The leader Pokemon X/Y, by comparison, made it to nearly 12 million in just about five months.
Here's the current list of top-selling 3DS games (as of March 31, 2015):
- Pokemon X/Y -- 13.85 million
- Mario Kart 7 -- 11.70 million
- Super Mario 3D Land -- 10.00 million
- Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire -- 9.94 million
- New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- 9.16 million
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- 8.94 million
- Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS -- 6.75 million
- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- 4.48 million
- Tomodachi Life -- 4.15 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D -- 3.70 million
Ash and Pikachu may have been around the block a couple times, but their appeal and Pokemon's as a whole continues on, not as strong but still very healthy.
