Mad Men might be coming to a close soon, but for many John Slattery will always be Roger Sterling. However, Marvel fans will remember him as Tony Starks late father Howard Stark in Iron Man 2. Slattery reprised his role as a much younger Howard Stark in Marvel’s upcoming film, Ant-Man, after casting played a game of tug-o-war between him and Dominic Cooper. Cooper, who will soon be coming to AMC in the new series Preacher, played World War 2 era Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger and ABC’s Agent Carter.
John Slattery recently spoke to Collider about he got stuck in the 60’s, this time as Howard Stark:
“I get a call from the usual root, my agent called and said they called and said, ‘would you be interested in coming back?’ and Dominic Cooper had played it. You know what? There was actually a moment there when they were doing the Captain America films, or they’d done two, and they had made the decision that I had to have my hair dark and to do Stark in the ‘60s so that twenty years prior to that it would make sense to have someone younger play the part. But that’s really the only kind of discussion, they go, ‘Dominic Cooper is going to play the guy’ and I said ‘Ok’ and then, ‘No, now you’re gonna do it’ then ‘He’s doing it’ so it’s kind of bounced back and forth and we’ve never met.”
