Ever since first being announced as Shailene Woodley's Divergent boyfriend, it has been assumed that Theo James was going to be using the burgeoning new franchise to launch his own set of new Underworld movies -- taking over for a now 41-year-old Kate Beckinsale. According to the latest gossip news updates, Theo is having to pass on the new vampire movies, however, because it would potentially conflict with the making of two final Allegiant films.
It has long not only been assumed but also reported by several reputable sources that Theo James would be getting his own Underworld movie just as soon as the studio was able to set everything into motion.
Just last September, the highly respected Hollywood Reporter announced that a new project was in the works that would have James reprising his role from the 2013 sequel -- only this time he'd be doing all the heavy lifting all by himself:
"James, who played a vampire named David in 2013's Underworld: Awakening, will be the central character in the new film, which is not a reboot but rather an expansion of the existing universe.
"Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the previous films, will likely not be returning."
As exciting as that all sounds, James recently explained to Digital Spy that he wasn't going to be able to be a part of the new Underworld project, which is now rumored to have Beckinsale back at the helm (via Franchise Herald):
"No, they have something in the works, but my involvement in it is...I think it's going be very difficult to do that with these [Divergent] movies, and my other commitments.,
Interestingly enough, Shailene Woodley certainly didn't seem to have any trouble squeezing in a new movie in between having to shoot their new Veronica Roth epic and the last.
In fact, the Fault in Our Stars actress was already hard at work on location last week with her Snowden costar Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who commemorated the day in D.C. via Twitter:
"Shailene and I are shooting in front of the White House today! #Snowden"
According to Snowden producer Todd Lieberman, Shai's new movie may not be as action packed as her last, but you shouldn't assume that it isn't going to have its own kick-ass special effects (via Fashion & Style):
"I don't want to promise too much, but I can say that the things that we've talked about have been very cool.
"There's going to be some really mind-blowing visuals.
"Those who have read the book know where it goes. It goes into a while different world, and we're really excited to explore that."
Perhaps, Theo and Beckinsale just couldn't find a way to share the limelight in Underworld franchise's fifth installment after all?
