With the recent announcement that the Transformers film franchise was expanding into a large shared universe, with sequels and spin-off’s much like that of Marvel, Ghostbusters and Star Wars. Now fans are looking at one of Hasbro’s hottest properties, G.I. Joe to help build up the universe. In addition to Transformers 5 and G.I. Joe 3, rumor has it that we could soon see an Avengers style crossover between the two. Could we be seeing Shia Labeouf and Mark Wahlberg teaming up with or fighting against, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and (a resurrected) Channing Tatum?
G.I. Joe and Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke to Cinemablend back in 2013 about the possibility of a crossover film, stating (via Screen Rant):
I guess it’s possible. I don’t know. I think I probably at this moment, I resist it. I don’t know necessarily why, but I just think there’s so much that’s so rich in the mythologies that I don’t think they need to draw from the other.”
Lorenzo di Bonaventura went on to add that if the right story came along, they very well could crossover:
“It’s not to say you couldn’t do it well, but both these properties have such rich mythologies with so many characters, that you could go a lot of movies before you start running out of ideas of what to do. But it’s not to say, if we found the right… I’d hate to set out to do that, but if I heard a story where we went, ‘Oh my God…,’ I could see a story right now about machination, machination of war and that could lead you sort of intrinsically to a Transformer.”
He even went on to compare the idea to that of Marvel, adding:
“I think in general, Marvel is doing it within their own universe, right? And so it doesn’t feel gimmicky in that way. I think that’s what I would really try to resist.”
Now with the new Transformers expanded universe announced could the crossover idea be in the works? What do you think? Would you like to see the Transformers and G.I. Joe team up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
