Off Off Broadway EXCLUSIVE: Daniel Bumgardner, 'You've Got My Song: the [unauthorized] Weezer musical'

Thus far, Classicalite has given you three installments of Daniel Bumgardner's You've Got My Song: The [unofficial] Weezer Musical.

A concert narrative in dramatic form--based on Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly, itself--we've come to the end of Act 1. Or, as Bumgardner calls these sixth and seven scenes, "You Won't Get with Me Tonight" and "Across the Sea."

"I sat with this idea for years," he tells us. "And eventually, I collaborated with Los Angeles musician and writer Ait Fetterolf on what would become our project blueprint, with which we would workshop the piece. We agreed on the established narrative presented in Pinkerton and wove in four additional Weezer tracks--both within the Songs from the Black Hole/Pinkerton era and beyond."

A Dialogue between Electricity and Reality.

SUSANNE: Who you callin’ bitch?

JON: Don’t you listen to a word they say.

SUSANNE: They make me so mad.

JON: They don’t matter to me anyway. Chill out baby, stay with me for a while. But that don’t mean I’ll get with you tonight.

SUSANNE: So pissed at those boys.

JON: Let me comfort you and hold your hand.

SUSANNE: Especially that Dondo.

JON: Acting like he knows he’s got a big thing. I know his type, you’re safe with me for a while. But that don’t mean I’ll get with you tonight.

JON, PAUL & MARIA: I want you so badly.

JON & PAUL: Too bad that you’re too bad for me.

JON: You love me, and I like you. But I got to, gotta getchoo!

SUSANNE: Oh, I love you so.

JON: Please remember that I’m just a friend.

SUSANNE: A friend who’s in my pants.

JON: Never more, never ever again.

JON & PAUL: You’re too crazy for me to settle down with. So I won’t let me lead you on with a kiss. I want you so badly. Too bad that you’re to bad for me.

JON: You love me, and I like you

JON & PAUL: But I got to, gotta getchoo!

JON: It hurts you so badly. I’m sorry, you can’t have me.

JON & PAUL: I won’t let me get with you tonight. That don’t mean I’ll get with you tonight. I want you so badly. Too bad that you’re too bad for me.

JON: You love me.

JON & PAUL: And I like you. But I got to, gotta getchoo!

JON: It hurts you so badly. I’m sorry, you can’t have me. It hurts you so badly. I’m sorry, you can’t have me

JON, PAUL & MARIA: I won’t let me get with...I won’t let me get with you tonight.

MARIA: Who you callin’ bitch?

PAUL: Don’t you listen to a word they say.

MARIA: They make me so mad.

PAUL: I don’t care about them anyway. Chill out baby, stay with me for a while. But that don’t mean I’ll get with you tonight.

PAUL, MARIA, JON & SUSANNE: That don’t mean I’ll get with you tonight.

Jon sitting alone in his apartment. He reads the letter.

JON: You are an 18-year-old girl who lives in a small city of Japan. And you heard me on the radio, about one year ago. And you're wanting to know all about me and my hobbies--my favorite food and my birthday. Why are you so far away from me? I need help, and you're way across the sea. I could never touch you; I think it would be wrong. I've got your letter, and you've got my song. They don't make stationery like this where I'm from--so fragile, so refined. So I sniff and I lick your envelope and fall to little pieces every time. I wonder what clothes you wear to school. I wonder how you decorate your room. I wonder how you touch yourself and curse myself for being across the sea. Why are you so far away from me? I need help, and you're way across the sea. I could never touch you; I think it would be wrong. I've got your letter, and you've got my song.

Paul and Maria, lying in bed. He could smoke. She does not.

PAUL: At 10, I shaved my head and tried to be a monk. I thought the older women would like me if I did. You see, ma, I'm a good little boy. It's all your fault. Momma, it's all your fault

JON: Goddamn, this business is really lame! I gotta live on an island to find the juice. So you send me your love from all around the world. As if I could live on.

JON & PAUL: Words and dreams and a million screams--oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel.

JON: Why are you so far away from me? Why are you so far away from me? I could never touch you; I think it would be wrong. I've got your letter, and you've got my song. I've got your letter. And you...you've got my song.

BLACKOUT.

INTERMISSION.
