Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have refused to get married, until all U.S. citizens can. Thanks to the Supreme Court’s DOMA verdict, the pair get engaged, after already having a baby.
Kristen and Dax have been exclusive since 2007. Bell, 32, and Shepard, 38, have officially been engaged since 2010.
Kristen went on record with CNN as saying:
“I don't believe in standing in the way of love, and I want to stand up for that right. And that's what it is. If someone wants to commit their life to another person, why would I not bolster that argument?”
Mr. Shepard, her fiance, also took a definitive stance on the issue. In the same CNN interview he was quoted as saying:
“We're not going to ask them to come celebrate a right they don't have. That's just tacky! Forget like anything else, it's like really tacky for us.”
The two kept their promise and did not marry until homosexuals had the same rights--a vow that other celeb couples like Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman have also pledged.
Unlike Kimmel and Silverman, Kristen and Dax’s relationship has lasted. Last night, on Twitter, Kristen Bell renewed their engagement, tweeting the following:
“@daxshepard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove. You’re damn right DOMA is unconstitutional!! #equalitymatters”
Dax quickly (and comically) responded with a tweet of his own:
“DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristenBell to Life!!!!”
A spokesman for the celebrity couple issued the following statement last night:
“They have been engaged for 2 1/2 years and have been waiting for this day so they can officially wed. They are beyond thrilled for their friends in the gay community.”
