Lucha Libre Legend Rey Mysterio FIRED From WWE: Konnan, Other Promotions Show Interests [#FreeRey]

Rey Mysterio is one of the biggest names to ever participate in the WWE. In recent news, though, it was revealed that Luchador has been fired from the promotion. There are many rumors that the #FreeRey campaign had a lot to do with it. Also, sources have pointed out that the onetime great will have no trouble finding a new wrestling home. Apparently, Konnan is already "working on setting up dates."

40-year-old Oscar Gutiérrez is better known by his ring name, Rey Mysterio. He got his start with the WWE in 2002. He quickly made a name for himself with his highflying Lucha Libre style.

After that, he became one of the most decorated wrestlers to ever step foot in the ring. He won the WCW World Tag Team Championship three times, he won the World Heavyweight Championship twice and the 2006 Royal Rumble.

For a while, though, he hasn't been appearing in any matches.

According to a report by TMZ Sports, he has officially been released by the WWE:

"Wrestling legend Rey Mysterio is done working for the WWE...[apparently] his contract expired Thursday, and both sides have decided to part ways...A rep for WWE [said,] 'Rey Mysterio is no longer under contract with WWE.' Rey appeared in a video for a rival wrestling company in Mexico last summer...and launched his #FreeRey campaign to get released from his WWE contract. Well, Rey's free now [because] his contract just expired...Sources close to Rey tell us he's excited to start working again because he's 100% healthy."

What is next for the WWE Legend?

According to a report by Wrestling Inc., he may already have a new promotion:

"Rey will have no trouble finding work with other promotions. Konnan is already reportedly working on setting up dates for Mysterio...There were plans for some kind of big reveal but news getting out today probably nixed those plans...Word is that Rey will be doing a number of signing appearances but likely won't be wrestling right away. Rey is expected to wrestle for Lucha Underground..."
