The ballet community is mourning the loss of Vladimir Shklyarov who passed away at just 39 years old.
Shklyarov was a principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theatre since 2011 and dedicated more than 20 years to his craft. His performances in ballets like "Sleeping Beauty," and "Swan Lake."
The St Petersburg company officially announced and said in a statement over the weekend, "Tonight, the favorite of the public, the star premier of the Mariinsky Theater, Honored Artist of Russia Vladimir Shklyarov, tragically died. This is a huge loss not only for the theatre's staff but for all of contemporary ballet."
"Our condolences to the artist's family, loved ones, friends and all the numerous admirers of his work and talent."
Authorities are reportedly looking into the circumstances surrounding his death. Representatives of the dancer informed the press that he tragically fell from the fifth floor of a building while under the influence of painkillers.
As recalled by witnesses, Shklyarov went to the balcony for fresh air, but unfortunately, his footing reportedly faltered on the slim edge.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti has stated that the incident is currently classified as an accident pending further investigation.
Hailing from Leningrad, Russia, Shklyarov's journey into the world of ballet began at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, where he completed his studies in 2003.
Over the years, he has been recognized with various awards, such as the Léonide Massine International Prize in 2008.
Unlike Olga Smirnova, the ballerina who left Russia for Europe, Shklyarov chose to stay in Russia and focused on his performances without making any additional statements regarding the ongoing conflict.
