Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba: The Roles That Made 'Wicked' Star Unforgettable

When it was announced that Cynthia Erivo would play Elphaba in the movie adaptation of "Wicked," many fans recognized her but were unable to pinpoint where they saw her from.

From the 'Sister Act' to 'The Color Purple'

Erivo started her acting career when she played the role of Deloris Van Cartier, who was represented by Whoopi Goldberg in the iconic 1992 movie, during the UK tour of "Sister Act."

Erivo played the role of Celie Johnson in the 2013 London version of "The Color Purple," and her outstanding performance attracted the attention of Broadway producers. Her skill really came to the fore when upon returning to the role on Broadway in 2015.

Making the Switch to the Screen

After the Broadway success, Erivo transitioned seamlessly to TV shows. She first appeared in the British comedy series "Chewing Gum" in 2015. She then increased her on-screen presence by starring in "The Tunnel" and "Mr. Selfridge."

Her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the 2019 movie "Harriet" was what really made her a household name in the acting industry. Erivo received two Oscar nominations, one for Best Actress and another for Best Original Song, for which she wrote a song for the film.
