The Royal Ballet will debut "MADDADDAM" around Europe next month.
The three acts of this ballet are based on the trilogy "Oryx and Crake," "The Year of the Flood," and "MaddAddam" by novelist Margaret Atwood.
Wayne McGregor's choreography in the shows will examine the intricacies of human life. It will also feature new musical score by Max Richter, which will help enhance the tale of societal collapse and the search for meaning in life, according to Broadway World.
Some of its themes include extinction, innovation, pride, compassion, love, and sorrow.
"MADDADDAM" first premiered in Toronto in 2022, created in collaboration with The National Ballet of Canada. Set in a futuristic world shaped by a bio-engineered disaster, the story reflects on the impact of this catastrophe on humanity.
Atwood has been involved in the project as a consultant since 2022, contributing her insights to help develop "MADDADDAM" and ensure it resonates with audiences.
According to its logline from 2022, "Themes of extinction and invention, hubris and humanity are spliced together with aspects of Atwood's non-fiction writings and political voice."
