Music Theatre International (MTI) has recently secured the licensing rights for the musical "& Juliet."

The Broadway show is about the alternative conclusion where the main character, Juliet, survives and sets off on a path of self-discovery and female empowerment.

President and CEO of MTI, Drew Cohen, said that the new interpretation of the timeless story offers an electrifying experience for both Shakespeare fans and lovers of pop songs.

"The songs of Max Martin are pop hits known the world over that have been the soundtrack to all of our lives. David West Read's witty, fun and empowering book makes this new take on this centuries-old tale more relevant than ever. We can't wait to offer '& Juliet' to theaters all around the world."

Book author David West Read also added, "I am thrilled that '& Juliet' will continue to thrive under the stewardship of MTI and inspire both performers and audiences."

"While this musical brings plenty of fun, incredible dance numbers and pop songs that are known and loved around the world, it is, at its core, a show about starting over, learning to love yourself and fighting for a better ending to your story — no matter who you are or where you come from. I hope that's one of the things people take away from the show."

Obtaining licensing rights from MTI for a production like "& Juliet" signifies that MTI has received the proper legal permissions to provide theaters and production companies with the script, score, and other necessary materials for the musical. This enables venues such as community theaters, schools, and regional theaters to bring the production to life using MTI's authorized resources, subject to specific terms and fees.

MTI acts as the intermediary connecting musical creators with the theater world, expanding the reach of a show beyond its initial Broadway or West End performances. This arrangement frequently includes the rights to modify the production, such as creating school editions, to cater to diverse audiences and performers.

Incorporating the book written by Read and a medley of catchy pop songs by Max Martin, "& Juliet" presents a new take on Shakespeare's classic, "Romeo and Juliet."
