Stephen Colbert, the genius behind The Colbert Report, has experienced yet another family tragedy. Lorna Elizabeth Tuck Colbert, Stephen's mom, died at the ripe old age of 92.
Stephen wasn't the only child who lost his mother today. Mrs. Colbert gave birth and cared for ten other children, as well.
Elizabeth, Stephen's sister, is perhaps the second most famous sibling. She was recently in a heated congressional race in Charleston, S.C. with Mark Sanford. Sanford, who shamed the state (as well as, the nation) was victorious.
The Post and Courier, the largest newspaper in Charleston, ran a touching obituary of the mother of 11:
"[She] was the matriarch of a family of 82 and an accomplished artist, a church leader, a businesswoman, a supporter of the arts and a woman whose profound faith was apparent in her daily life."
Stephen is no stranger to tragedy. When he was a child, his father (and two of his brothers) were killed in a terrible plane crash.
Lorna's death, while still horrible, was less sudden. The entertainer knew that his mom's health had been deteriorating for quite some time.
In February of this year, things quickly went downhill for his mom. As a result of her health, the superstar comedian suspended production of the Report, so that he can spend some time with her.
When he returned from the unscheduled hiatus, he only briefly mentioned his absence. In the vaguest of terms did he offer any insight:
"Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady."
