Kim Deal, founding member and legendary bassist, quits the Pixies.
Deal joined the Pixies way back in 1986 by fairly unconventional means--she answered an ad in the paper.
The Boston Phoenix ran an ad written by Frank Black, founder and lead singer. Deal applied and got the gig.
She was a perfect fit for the band and helped write and perform numerous songs, most notably "Gigantic."
Soon, however, the honeymoon was over. Black and Deal would often get into heated arguments over the direction the band should take.
Four years after meeting, and two albums later, the two parted ways. Their separation, the first of many, didn't last long.
Within a year, Deal returned to the band. Of course, this was after she formed her own group, The Breeders.
While The Breeders experienced critical and financial success, the allure of returning to the Pixies proved to great to pass up.
One year later, Frank Black disbanded the Pixies. It would be 12 years before the band would reunite. In 2004, the group made a surprise performance at Austin City Limits and Coachella.
Aside from a few sporadic tour dates, the group kept quite until the 20 year anniversary of their hallmark album, Doolittle. The last date they performed together was in 2011.
The band released this statement today on their website:
We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.
