Melissa McCarthy, the breakout star from Bridesmaids, is finally responding to the unprecedented attacks from Rex Reed. Among other things, he called the actress an obese hippo.
Reed, who is a critic for the New York Observer, crossed a serious line in his review of McCarthy's Identity Thief. A jab or two would have simply been in poor taste, but Reed went for a full TKO in his scathing analysis.
Much of the article focused not on the movie itself, but on McCarthy's physical appearance. Reed told his audience:
"Melissa McCarthy is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."
Wow! Well, Melissa had a few words for Mr. Reed as well. Spoiler alert, she was a lot classier:
"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."
McCarthy went on to comment about society, in general:
"It's a strange epidemic of body image and body dysmorphia, comments (like Reed issued) just add to all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, 'That doesn't reflect on me.'"
McCarthy, who is now 42, also talked about how age has played a huge factor in her ability to handle such vicious press. If she were a younger woman, the article would have destroyed her, mentally.
But, now McCarthy is a secure woman who knows her self worth.
