‘Today’ Show Matt Lauer Replaces Brian Williams after Denying Giada De Laurentiis Cheating Rumors [NEWS UPDATE]

It seems that Brain Williams' loss might wind up being Matt Lauer's gain. According to the latest gossip news updates, the Today show co-host's name is being bandied around as a possible replacement for the NBC news anchor if the network decides he must be fired in light of his recent admission to lying about his helicopter experience in the Iraq War. While Lauer has yet to officially address the rumors that his is already on the short list of possible Williams' replacements, Katie Couric's old cast mate did dismiss any and all talk about his having cheated with married Food network star Giada de Laurentiis as completely untrue.

It looks like the country may not be willing to let Brain Williams off with just a warning after he recently revealed that he fabricated his often told story about being aboard a helicopter that was shot down at the beginning of the Iraq War, and NBC may soon by forced to fire him.

While Lester Holt and even Tom Brokaw are considered to be favorites to take Williams' spot as the face of NBC News if he is fired, senior TV editor for Vairety.com and all-around entertainment expert, Brian Steinberg, told Fox News that Lauer is still a strong candidate for the job:

"Matt Lauer is the best known news person on the network, and he has years of experience interviewing everyone from heads of state to celebrities.

"The question is 'would he want to do it?'"

So far Matt has, of course, kept his mouth shut about whether he'd be willing to take the job or not, but the Today show host did take the time to dispel the rumors that his sleeping with Giada de Laurentiis led to her recent divorce from husband Todd Thompson (via Page Six):

"There is no truth to that [Giada] story.

"From the horse's mouth, we have been friends for 10 years and, more importantly, I feel bad for what she has been going through."

That's right, Matt...you are going to have to maintain the squeaky clean image if you are ever going to have a real shot at beating out Tom Brokaw for a seat at that NBC News desk.
